Ribbit, voiced by Skye Redden[3][4] was a green frog who was the third to last individual to have abstracted.[5] She is the digital copy of the human Leah and was very close friends with Jax and Kaufmo.
Appearance
Ribbit was a tall anthropomorphic green frog with a cartoonishly lanky build and had a body shape predominantly formed of rounded, oval-like shapes; with her head, body and eyes being the most prominent oval-shaped features. She had wide, oval-shaped eyes with jet black pie slice cut pupils and jet black eyelids, sporting three thin eyelashes at the bottom, alongside two bright pink blush marks that would partially lie behind the corners of their eyes. As well, she had a thin black line for a mouth, and it was often curved into a U-shaped smirk or smile.
Identically to Jax, Ribbit had the outward design of a rubberhose-esque character; shown to have had long, slim limbs that appeared quite flexible. Her legs were particularly lengthy and frog-like, having flat three-toed feet and a rounded, frog shaped head. She also had a light green coloring that went across her muzzle and followed all the way down to her stomach. As an accessory, Ribbit wore a simple cartoony pink-red bow tie around her neck.
Personality
Ribbit made her official appearance in Remember through flashbacks, where she was presented as warm, friendly, and welcoming to her friends, especially Jax, whom she introduced to Kaufmo and the other circus members, eventually helping Jax and Kaufmo form a strong bond. Interpersonally, she appeared naturally inclusive and deeply relational, with tonal flexibility: capable of laidback, low-stakes companionship with Kaufmo, but able to match Jax's edge almost immediately.
She was shown to be a sweet, charismatic, socially intelligent, and witty extrovert who cared deeply about her friends, especially Jax. After opening up to each other, Ribbit put her bowtie on Jax's head as a symbol of their trust. However, after that moment, Jax disregarded the friendship they had forged and avoided her altogether. She seemed to struggle to accept Jax's rejection, even when it was clear. This led her to become more isolated and depressed, which directly led to her abstraction.
Biography
Background
Prior to the events of the series, Ribbit's human counterpart, Leah, used to live with her Mormon parents. Due to not following their strong religious beliefs, she moved out. After putting on a headset made by Mike Dobby, a digital copy of her was created inside the Digital Circus, which was known as Ribbit. She wanted to see her parents again, though she was unable to due to being stuck in the circus.
"Untitled"
Ribbit was first revealed briefly during the intermission scene when Jax ran and stopped at her door. Ragatha also mentioned earlier in the episode that Jax had no real friends in the circus anymore, alluding to Kaufmo's and Ribbit's abstraction, resulting in a shocked and angry look from Jax.
"They All Get Guns"
Ribbit's door was seen again when Jax, sitting in the hallway of the performer's rooms, looked at Kaufmo's door icon. Afterwards, she looked over at Ribbit's crossed out icon. Spotting it, she gains an unrecognizable look on her face and quickly runs off to reunite with Pomni.
"Beach Episode"
Ribbit was seen in a photo with Kaufmo and Jax holding mugs, possibly hot cocoa with whipped cream with marshmallows on top and within the Tent's Cafe.
When Jax is alone in his bedroom, he hallucinates Ribbit's hands beginning to approach him, coming out of a triangle shaped hole from the wall that previously wasn't there. As Ribbit reaches out to Jax, his gloves fade away and their hands touch, causing Jax to get into a fever-like dream as he begins to abstract. Ribbit and Kaufmo's heads are seen during the fever dream, melding into the background.
Ribbit and Kaufmo were later mentioned by Ragatha when she and Pomni were talking to Abel. Later during the scene where the gang is in Caine's office, Jax looks into a globe containing a past adventure, this one being a snowy area, and muffled voices presumably belonging to Ribbit and Jax can be heard.
"hjsakldfhl"
In Jax's nightmare sequence after telling off Caine with the other circus members, he is surrounded by shadowy silhouettes resembling Ribbit, Kaufmo, and Pomni that cruelly laugh at him. The shadow resembling Ribbit grabs Jax's ears, before ripping off his purple skin, revealing his yellow insides.
"Remember"
Ribbit is first shown standing beside Kinger, Ragatha and Kaufmo when Jax first enters the circus, scared and confused. They try to calm her down but she slaps them away fearfully. Ribbit takes Jax to the cafe that she and Kaufmo made it a weekly tradition to visit every week. Ribbit and Kaufmo can be seen on a similar stargazing adventure to the one shown in "Untitled," Ribbit is the first one to make Jax laugh, something that made her very proud. The trio then excitedly laugh together.
Later, we see Ribbit sitting in her room from Jax's point of view, asking Jax if he's ever done something he regrets. Jax gives a sarcastic answer but Ribbit clarifies she was referring to the outside world. Ribbit confesses that she had cut contact with her parents after she moved out, as they were very faithful Mormons and she didn't follow that lifestyle. She says she still wishes to see them again despite being stuck in the circus. Ribbit says that it's her way of letting Jax know how much he trusts her, allowing him to open up about his own personal stories. Ribbit listens intently, trying to comfort him and even putting her bowtie on his head as a symbol of their strong bond and trust in each other and accepting of their pasts, assuring Jax that his secret is safe with her. Kaufmo knocks at the door, startling Jax and causing him to threaten Ribbit to never speak with her again if she tells anyone what he shared. Ribbit agrees, but Jax continues to act strangely following the conversation, stating that he just made it up and laughed at Ribbit for believing him. On multiple occasions, Jax would turn down Ribbit's requests to team up, choosing Kaufmo instead.
Her dismissive behavior towards Ribbit continues until the snowy summit adventure, when the two have an intense argument. Ribbit tries to apologize for prying but says she still wants to be friends, with Jax not listening and accusing her of making things up. Sometime later, Ribbit would still make an attempt to be a part of the group until Jax immediately changes the subject as soon as he sees Ribbit approaching, causing her to walk away in total defeat. Later, Ragatha worriedly asks Jax if he's seen Ribbit, then we see her right in front of her door about to enter. She walks away, and then it cuts to Ribbit's abstracted form, aggressively roaming around the circus while Jax is trying to hide. Kaufmo tries to comfort Jax, but he still insists that everything is fine.
In her abstracted form, Ribbit makes one final appearance in the aquarium (the only time she would be seen outside of flashbacks), where she is seen swimming around with the also-abstracted Kaufmo and Jax, having finally reunited with her friends as Pomni watches on.
Trivia
- Ribbit's design is possibly based on Pomni's early design, in which she would have been a male frog.[6][7]
- Their current designs also both share blush marks, black eyelids and short eyelashes.
- Ribbit's door is the only door that cannot be seen in the PILOT. It first appears in Untitled.
- Jax has three colored chairs in her room: purple, yellow, and green. This further implies the close friendship between her, Kaufmo, and Ribbit.
- Ribbit is the second character in the show confirmed to use they/them pronouns, the first being Zooble, although unlike them she also uses she/her pronouns.
- Among the paintings in Kaufmo's room visible in the PILOT, there's a drawing of what appears to be Kaufmo opening a door to discover an abstracted entity, suggesting that Kaufmo might have been the first one to find out that Ribbit abstracted.
- This is further evidenced in Remember, as Jax was shown to be extremely hesitant to open Ribbit's door.
- The name of Ribbit's human counterpart is Leah.[8]
